ABOUT THE MALDIVES

The Maldives are what some people consider heaven on Earth. We absolutely agree with this, although it is not the place for everybody. We will tell you why. When you want to do absolutely nothing and chill as you have never chilled before, the Maldives is the ultimate place on Earth. If you are an adventurous type and want to go some place new everyday, it might not be the perfect vacation for you. We went to the Maldives right after a month in Sri Lanka. Normally we would be too adventurous for a place like this, but after 4 weeks of traveling in Sri Lanka, this was the most relaxing spot of the whole world. Normally we don’t make a video of our smaller trips, but since the Maldives are so utterly beautiful, we couldn’t resist recording a day on the Maldives. Watch it above.

WHAT TO DO IN THE MALDIVES

We only stayed in the Maldives for 3 days. This was just about enough for us. We think you shouldn’t go longer than a week, depending on your budget. Why? It is really expensive over there. Like really.

Sun Siyam Olhuveli
The resort we’ve been is called Sun Siyam, location Olhuveli. This private resort has its own island. Sun Siyam Olhuveli is the best resort of all the Maldivian resorts we have checked out when it comes to price/quality. It’s an all inclusive resort which means you have the option to choose all inclusive if that is within your budget. We didn’t choose this one though. There are also multiple accommodation options. To really get the feeling of being in the Maldives, we chose the Grand Water Villa. These are the iconic villa’s which are in the lagune.

Snorkling
The Maldives are known for relaxation. However, this does not necessarily mean doing nothing. We decided to dedicate one day to exploring the island. We hired a snorkling set, and went on swimming and exploring around the island. If you are lucky, you’ll find plenty of tropical fish, sea turtles, manta rays and even small sharks. We have seen them all. Guess we were really lucky ;)

Foods and drinks
Depending on the package you’ve chosen, food and beverages will come as an additional charge. Sun Siyam Olhuveli offers various restaurants with an all you can eat breakfast, 3 different restaurants to lunch, and 4 restaurants to have dinner. You can eat Pizza, Thai, Indian or Seafood. These dishes are simply astonishing. We cannot pick a favorite for you because all of them where so good. It just depends on what you like.

For drinks there are also a lot of options. You don’t have to stick to a restaurant to order a drink, since there are different bars around the island where you can order a drink. They do serve alcoholic drinks even though it is officially a Muslim Island.

A welcome option is the fact you can order food when you are in your bungalow. You just have to call the reception and place your order. The food and drinks will be prepared and delivered to your doorstep. A private lunch/dinner on the lagune is what will follow, for no additional charge.

Other activities
In order to keep all the people entertained, Sun Siyam offers a wide range of activities every day, all day. Examples of these are jet skiing, diving with whales, karaoke nights, you name it. We were blown away by all the options we had. So much, we couldn’t complete them in three days.

Pros and cons about the Maldives

Since the Maldives is a one of its kind experience we will line up the biggest pro’s and cons underneath, so you can make the right decisions.

Pros

  • It is a private place and the hospitality is like no other. You can really live like a king (or queen) here.

  • The Maldives are disappearing as the sea level is rising so it is something you can visit now, but not in the future anymore.

  • There are plenty of things to do, if you have the budget.

  • It is just so freaking beautiful, have we not mentioned that before?

  • C'mon it is the Maldives.

Cons

  • It is really expensive. A club sandwich for example will set you back 22 USD. A beer 9 USD. Pizza’s start at 26 USD and the average price of a dinner dish is around 30 USD.

  • It is best if you visit the Maldives if you’re close by, such as India or Sri Lanka. It might not be worth it to fly all the way over there, if you’re not planning on staying longer than a week.

  • You cannot really explore the island since it is only a couple square kilometres. If you are looking for an everyday new adventure it might be too small.
