ABOUT THE DOLOMITES

Some mountains just hang out in the background, quietly watching as you pass by. But the Dolomites? They are quite the opposite. These giants shoot up suddenly, sharp and pale. Light here isn’t just light; it wraps itself around every crack, spills down every ridge, and shines different in every hidden valley, a blessing if you’re a photographer. The Dolomites are unlike anything else we’ve ever seen.

WHAT TO DO IN THE DOLOMITES

We divided our 2 week trip through the Dolomites in 2 sections, the right side and the left side of the Dolomites. On both sides, we stayed at one camping which we used as a base to explore the surrounding region. Camping Toblacher see on the right side, camping Marmolada Malga Capela on the left side, with Cortina d’Ampezzo as the center town the connects the two sides.

The right side

  • Lago di Sorapis (Sorapissee)

  • Tre Cime (Drei Zinnen)

  • Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee)

Lago di Sorapis
This lake looks like something out of a dream with its bright turquoise water surrounded by sharp mountain peaks. The hike there is a bit tough but worth it. You’ll walk through forests and rocky paths until suddenly the lake shows up, glowing in the sunlight. It’s a perfect place to take a break and just enjoy the amazing view. If you want to skip the crowds, go early! We made the mistake of going to late. The Dolomites is an increasingly popular destination so that applies to all the hikes.

Tre Cime
Tre Cime is the big star of the Dolomites. These three huge rock towers stand out everywhere you go. Hiking around them feels like you’re inside a giant natural cathedral. The views are insane no matter how long you walk. Catching the sunrise there is something you’ll never forget. We recommend making an advanced reservation for the parking lot here, since the sunrise time slots get booked quickly.

Lago di Braies
Lago di Braies is the classic postcard lake with the boats, super clear water that perfectly reflects the mountains if there’s no wind. It’s a favorite spot for photos and just chilling out. You can rent a rowboat and paddle around or just walk all around the lake. No wonder it’s one of the most popular places here.

    Cortina d’Ampezzo
Cortina is like the chic little heart of the Dolomites. It’s got cool cafés, great restaurants, and plenty of shops, all surrounded by massive mountain views. In winter it’s a ski paradise, and in summer it’s the perfect base for hikes and road trips. Even if you’re not doing anything adventurous, just hanging out here sipping a wine on rest days is worth the visit.

    Lago di Limides
This one’s a small lake, but it’s got big charm. On a calm day the water turns into a perfect mirror for the mountains around it. It’s a short and easy walk to get there, so it’s great if you want a peaceful spot without a huge hike. Perfect for a picnic or just a quiet moment in nature.

    Giau Pass / Gardena Pass
These mountain passes are all about epic views and winding roads. Driving here is an adventure in itself, with every turn opening up a new panorama. There are plenty of places to pull over, take photos, or just stand there and take it all in. If you love road trips, these are the kind of drives you dream about. We took this road when traveling from the right side to the left side and made some stops at Cortina D’Ampezzo and Lago di Limides on this travel day, which was a perfect combination.

The left side

  • Alpe di Suisi (Seiser Alm)

  • Seceda

  • Lago di Carezza (Karersee)

Alpe di Siusi
Alpe di Siusi is like a giant green carpet rolled out between the mountains. It’s the largest high-altitude meadow in Europe, and walking here feels like stepping into a Bob Ross painting. In summer, wildflowers cover the fields, and in winter, it turns into a snowy wonderland. Whether you hike, bike, or just wander around, the views in every direction are ridiculous. You officially can not drive here unless you have a reservation of one of the hotels in the area so we parked the car at the closest parking lot which was still about a 50 min walk.

Seceda
Seceda is all about drama. This famous ridgeline looks like something from another planet, and the view from the top is one of the best in the Dolomites. We advise to take a cable car up from Urtijëi as this hike isn’t so interesting and very intense. You will end up in a green valley where you can see the dramatic peaks and hike around the area.

Lago di Carezza
This lake might be small, but that doesn’t make it less. The water is such a deep emerald green that locals call it the “Rainbow Lake.” On a clear day, the surrounding peaks reflect perfectly in the water, making it feel really pretty. It’s an easy stop and might be our favorite.
